Planting trees in Superoots Fielders

Key Points

  • The soil level in the Fielder should be to the bottom of the Fielder label, leaving about 35mm of fabric above the surface to avoid any possibility of root escapes over the top.
  • Use a former to keep the Fielder stretched during filling. Avoid wrinkles in the Fielder by pulling the wall fabric up when removing the former.
  • Prune the root systems of the planting stock to leave 50mm clearance to the Fielder wall. This will allow developing roots to meet the Fielder wall or base at right angles.
  • Place in good field soil and refill the Superoots Fielder with the same soil. When fertilizing and watering, do so both in and around the Superoots Fielder.
Lifting trees in Superoots Fielders

The enormous financial benefits of using Superoots Fielders are reaped at harvest time.

No fancy hydraulic equipment is required.

Lifting of Superoots Fielder trees is easy, fast and cheap - a fraction of the cost of any other rootballing method. The extended harvest allows an improved service to customers and provides a great boost to the cashflow of a seasonal business.

  • Superoots Fielder grown trees can be lifted at most times of the year in most weather.
  • Lifting trees in Fielders during the Spring and Summer months with proper care can be very successful. However, the nature of the species must be considered and periods of most prolific growth or when the tree is softest ought to be avoided.
  • Trees must be held at the nursery and heavily watered for up to two weeks or until the tree has fully re-established within the Fielder. Only then is the tree ready for dispatch.
Permanent planting of the Superoots Tree Pit Liners

Superoots Tree Pit Liners are used in urban planting to allow the healthier development of trees in a difficult environment. The restriction of roots by the Tree Pit Liner prevents damage to the pavements, roads, foundations and services.

The roots penetrating the wall of the Fielder can grow up to about 2 metres beyond the Superoots Fielder (depending on the nature of the soil) to source water and help anchor the tree.

The use of Superoots Tree Pit Liners for street planting must still be considered experimental, as should any other product promoted as a permanent root manipulation system.

The results of using Tree Pit Liners to date have been excellent but 14 years is not enough to guarantee the behaviour of a tree with permanently restricted roots in maturity.

Because of the consistency of the Fielder fabric, growers must insist that end users fully remove the bag when planting the tree.
